Workshop Overview

Ethics in a Digital World:

This 3-hour workshop will address the management of legal and ethical risks for therapists involved in social networking, online therapy or counseling and electronic communication with clients. The presenter will also provide an overview of confidentiality, privilege and privacy, including HIPAA and the new HITECH breach notification requirements and how these issues impact use of electronic media. She will also discuss issues of danger to self and others as they are affected by electronic communication. Ms. Wheeler will also discuss the myriad boundary issues that arise in this context and how to avoid or manage them. De-identified, real life examples will be shared and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a case study.

Mindfulness in Psychotherapy:

Mindfulness skills are used increasingly in psychotherapy and can enhance the well-being of clients and therapists alike. This presentation will introduce the concept of mindfulness, aspects of its Buddhist roots that are being integrated into clinical models, and its research base. Participants will explore both personal and clinical uses of mindfulness and have opportunities to practice mindfulness techniques.
